For travellers travelling with children, the railways have introduced “baby berths.”

On a trial basis, to introduce on the side of the Lucknow Mail’s lower main berths

As part of a pilot project, the railways installed foldable “baby berths” on the side of the lower main berths of the Lucknow Mail to make train travel more comfortable for passengers travelling with infants.

Officials said plans would be set up to spread the idea to other lines based on customer response.

When not in use, the “baby berth,” which is hinged to the lower main berths, can be folded and secured with a stopper. It is now parallel to the main berth.

On April 27, two “baby berths” measuring 770 mm in length, 255 mm in width, and 76.2 mm in height were installed in the second cabins of 12 and 60 main berths on both ends of coaches on the Lucknow Mail.

“This is a pilot programme that will be extended after we get favourable feedback from travellers. We’ll put the necessary details on CRIS (Centre for Railway Information Systems), where it can be booked on-demand after we try it out more and record the feedback “According to a Northern Railway official.

“The (booking) system will be similar to the one we currently use to provide lower berths to senior citizens. So, once a passenger confirms that they will be travelling with a child, we will offer them a berth. However, it is still in its infancy “explained the official.

There is currently no way for ladies travelling with babies to reserve the lower bunk.
