The modular trio is available at various price tiers.
HTC has added three new PC-powered virtual reality headsets to its lineup, each with a distinct price point and a focus on various types of experiences.
The new Vive Cosmos Series expands on the original Vive Cosmos, which was released in late 2019, by adding three more kinds of faceplates for customers to choose from.
The Vive Cosmos Elite, which includes inside-out tracking through a pre-installed external tracking faceplate and costs $899 at launch, is at the top of the spectrum. The Elite faceplate may be removed and used with the regular and original Cosmos, and it can be purchased separately for $199.
The Vive Cosmos XR is the next in line, but it is more of a development kit than a consumer product. It, like the Elite, may be purchased with the faceplate already attached, but this version will have XR passthrough cameras.
The Vive Cosmos Play is the cheapest of the three, but it’s also the most exciting. This headgear, aimed for newcomers, has four cameras that can be monitored inside-out and is compatible with games like Angry Birds VR: Isle of Pigs and The Curious Tale of the Stolen Pets.
According to HTC, the Elite option will be available on February 24, with release dates and pricing for the remainder of the Vive Cosmos Series to be revealed in the following months.
Will the new headset trio be enough to chip away at Oculus’ market dominance? Only time will tell, but the addition of additional alternatives is at the very least encouraging. We simply wish we could get our hands on a new solo headset as well.
